Alaska - Beaded sealskin moccasin
with arctic fox trimming
The Alaskan arctic population consists mainly of Inuit Inuvialuit,
Inupiat and Yuit Eskimoan peoples. Skin footwear protects them
well when they travel and hunt on the land. Footwaer is made of
cloth, caribou, seal or other skin with hard or soft soles. The
Inuvialuit mocassin shown above has a sealskin upper trimmed with
arctic fox and is sewn to a hard, pre-formed, sun-bleached, boat-shaped,
pleated sealskin sole. The beadwork on the vamp has a floral pattern
enhancing the overall look. Sewing was done on the upper part
with dried caribou sinew. To attach the sole to the upper, the
stronger and longer narwhal sinew was used.
