Venezuela - Sandal with vegetable
fibre upper and car tire sole
Sandals constructed partly or entirely out of old car tires are
found all over the world. Recycling in its optimal form. The sole
is cut out of a flat part of a tire and split to the required
thickness. Slits are made into the top layer in which the upper
is fastened. On the above sandal the upper is woven of dyed vegetable
fibres and cotton. In rural areas the uppers are made of straps
of car tire rubber thus facilitating the wearer's crossing of
rivers and wade places. Sometimes the uppers are decorated with
colourful pom-poms. This type of footwear is one of the most economical:
cheap and with a very high durability.
