Belgium - Cattle dealers Sundag
clog - early 20th century
The robust, solid and plain working clogs had their counterparts
in finely finished and decorated wooden shoes. In the 19th and
early to mid 20th century not many people could afford luxurious
leather shoes. Clog makers therefore decorated their finer clogs
to look like normal shoes. Stitching was simulated by painting
or carving and even shoe buttons were carved to imitate a shoe
as much as possible. These finer clogs were reserved for Sundays,
church and for special occasions. Cattle dealers wore them to
impress and look more well-to-do on cattle markets. Sunday clogs
in this execution can be found all over Holland and Belgium.
