Norway - Women's wooden shoe
with upturned toe - early 20th century
Like in Holland and Belgium not all people could afford leather
shoes with buckles to be worn with the traditional "Bunad"
dress in the Setesdal (dal=valley) area of Norway. So sunday clogs
were created here too with carved decorations. The turned-up toe
part, made it easier to unroll the foot during walking. It is
also said to prevent cracking of the toe-part on sudden impact.
Around Christmas time, another custom involving wooden shoes comes
to life in Norway, when colourful inside and outside painted clogs
are used as containers for children's sweets and candy.
