Switzerland - "Urnerboden"
woodbottomed sandal/overshoe - mid 20th century
This type of footwear can be found in the Uri "canton"
or province in the Alp Mountain range in Switzerland, around the
plains of the river Po in Italy where they are called: "Zoccoli",
as well as in Jamtland Sweden and south-west Finland. In the latter
two countries, they are executed with a single laced leather strap
on the instep. This multi-purpose footwear with raised edges can
be worn in summer as a sandal and in wintertime as a mud or overshoe
and is facilitated with adjustable laced leather straps. The same
style, however executed with leather laces running through holes
in the raised edges and called "tupeles", were worn
in Latvia and Estonia.
