Indonesia - Carved and painted
"Paduka" wedding clog - mid 20th century
Cultural forms in Madura are generally speaking similar to those
of Java and, looked at from a wider viewpoint; belong to the Java
- Bali - Madura - Sunda family. Madurese culture, however, has
its own shades and tones, undoubtedly conditioned in part by the
harsh landscape and climate. Although the majority of the people
are muslims, about two percent are devoted Hindus. The too stick
to Hindu customs relating to the use of leather as described before
in September. The wooden toe-knob sandal shown here is called
"paduka" and is intricately carved in one piece and
painted with the use of liquid gold. It was used for a wedding
ceremony. Madurese padukas for daily wear are less elaborate but
still nicely carved and painted.
