    Japan - Tokio Kumagai - Design 'Piet Mondriaan' - 1984

Tokio Kumagai was born in 1947 in Sendai-Japan. After graduating in 1970 from the famous Bunka Fukuso Gakuin College of Design in Tokio, he moves to Paris on a ticket he won as a design prize. Throughout hte 70's he designed for a number of fashion houses like Rodier, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Charles Castelbajac, Elio Fiorucci and Pierre d'Alby. In 1981 he started his own boutique in Paris, inspired by artists such as Kandinsky, Pollock and Mondriaan. He hand painted his shoes in a manner reminiscent of a particular artist's style. He died in 1987 at the young age of 40.
