Ian - Bedouin bride's ankle boot - 'Giveh' - mid 20th C
Giveh are soft, comfortable, durable all handmade shoes worn in rural and mountainous areas of Iran. The upper is woven by women at home in the smae way as Kelim-no pile-carpets, to fit the size of the sole. The latter si mad of 12 cm wide folded waste cloth, pressed tightly side by side and held together by several strands of rawhide, pulled through each strip of cloth with the help of large iron needles and then cut in shape. The above Giveh belonged to a Bedouin bride from the Shiraz area. The upper is kelim woven from silk, which is generally used for formal occasions instead of cotton. She adorned her bridal shoes with little shells she found in the surrounding desert. |
