Pakistan - "Peshawari" men's sandals with chain stitch embroidery - Mid 20th C
The region forming modern Pakistan was home to the ancient Indian Indus Valley Civilization and then, successively, recipient of ancient Vedic, Persian, Turco-Mongol, Indo-Greek and Islamic cultures. The society of Pakistan comprises numerous diverse cultures and ethnic groups from the Punjabis and Sindhis in the east to the tribal cultures of the Baloch and Pashtun in the west and the ancient Dardic in the north. The national dress of Pakistan is shalwar kameez for both men and women. It consists of a long loose fitting tunic with very baggy trousers. The dress is believed to be an amalgamation of the dress worn by the ancient Turks, Persians and Afghans (Pashtuns) who have left their impression on the people and culture of Pakistan. In Peshawar men wear chain-stitch embroidered leather sandals ike the one shown here, called "Chappal". |
