Armenia - Men's shoes "Tregh" - Braided rope upper on leather soles - Early 20th C

Armenia, also known as Hayastan, is strategically located between two continents which has subjected in to invasions by many peoples, including the Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Mongols, Persians, Ottoman Turks and Russians. Over the years the invading people left their marks and therefore Armenia has developed a unique culture. It is similar to and yet distinct from many of the bordering countries like Russia, Georgia, and Iran as well as Mediterranean nations such as Greece, and Italy. Armenian culture has strong influences from both its Eastern neighbours, as well as an underlying influence from Europe to the West. In dresses wool and fur were utilized by the Armenians and later cotton that was gronw in the fertile valleys. The above opank style shoe is proof of that mixture of influences by neighbouring countries.
