Turkmenistan - Ladies shoe "Kavsh" - Embroidered donkey leather - Mid 20th C
The name Turkmenistan derives from Persian, meaning "land of the Turkmen". The Turkmen people have traditionally been nomads and horsemen. A Turkman can be identified anywhere by the traditional "telpek" hats, which are large black sheepskin hats that resemble afros and wear red robes over white shirts. Women wear long sackdresses over narrow trousers. These are ornamented with embroidery as well as decorations. Men's clothes, too, have embroidery but are simpeler. Embroidery exists not only on clothes but also on table-cloth, handkerchiefs, bags, saddles, "dutar" cases and shoes. The one shown above has silve thread and silk embroidery on a donkey leather upper. |
